Shift Happens with Richard Sutton | Nicholas Dlamini on Curiosity, Exploration and Discovery
9 August 2026
Growing up in Capricorn Township, Nicholas Dlamini rarely left his neighbourhood.
Then one day, a bicycle changed everything.
In this episode of Shift Happens, the first Black South African cyclist to compete in the Tour de France reflects on the curiosity that first inspired him to ride, the opportunities that followed, and the setbacks that nearly ended his career.
Nicholas shares how discovering Cape Town on a bicycle expanded not only his world, but his belief in what was possible. He also opens up about the crash that left doctors discussing the possibility of amputating his arm, how becoming a father reshaped his perspective on risk, and why curiosity continues to guide every new chapter of his life.
This is a conversation about curiosity, exploration and discovering what’s possible beyond the limits we place on ourselves.
