WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF SUGAR AVOIDANCE - WHAT ABOUT FRUIT?
We now know that there are 76 ways in which sugar damages our health - the big question is what about fruit?
In a study on over 71 000 participants looking at fruit and vegetable consumption and the relationship to illness and premature mortality, it showed that mortality and illness rates were significantly lower in those who ate several servings of fruit and veg/day (no surprises there). Where it got interesting was the fact that those who ate only 1 fruit a day, lived almost 19 months longer than those who ate none. Within the 13 year study period, it revealed that 5 servings of fruit/veg a day lowered the risk of developing a fatal disease by 53% and/or increased lifespan by at least 3 years! Neither fruit or veg on its own was able to reproduce these results. Consider that fruit is packed with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other compounds that neutralize many of the negative affects of sugar. This said, just remember that fruit is highly caloric and overconsumption is not a great idea (especially within the context of weight management)!
